Written by Shelley Rickey
Bare feet walkin’ ‘cross the muddy ground
Feed-sack dress, firefly crown
Pack my bag and pawn my ring
Ride that rail to New Orleans
I’m goin’ down, goin’ down
Further than I’ve ever been
Change my name and choose my friends
I’m goin’ down, goin’ down
Down that lamp lit road
LuLu’s waitin’ so I’ve been told
Velvet shoes 'pon a polished floor
Madame opens the parlour door
Hungry hands and thirsty souls
Bloody sheet and coin of gold
I’m goin’ down, goin’ down
Further than I’ve ever been
Faceless favors for nameless men
I’m goin’ down, goin’ down
If my price you pay
Count my coins and sleep all day
Rushin’ boots through the pourin’ rain
Whistle blowin’, A boardin’ train
Money made by selling me
Money used to set me free
I’m goin’ down, goin’ down
Further than I’ve ever been
Small towns passin’ the window pane
I’m goin’ down, goin’ down
On my knees to pray
Black bird sings then she flies away
Bare feet walkin’ 'cross the muddy ground
Feed-sack dress, firefly crown

Great lyrics Shelly! As a fellow artist I think you have created some great images. You can feel the mud between your toes and the roughness of the burlap on your own skin. Great work!

Hi Steve,
Thanks so much! I must say, I'm quite proud of it. :)
shelley, this shelley wears firefly crowns too...
play it for me when we meet in rotterdam ok?
and PS - WHO PLAYS THE SAW? i need a saw player.
xx
I'd be happy to play it for you.
And, i play the saw! Can i be on your next album with my saw?! :)
Beautiful song..and - looking at the left pane - you absolutely are an artist!
Thanks Babe!
Shelley, I love this! Sad, sad lyrics worthy of Stephen Foster and a hopeful sound that fills it with delicious poignancy. Firefly crown is a perfect, vivid image of beauty and poverty.
(Btw -- where did you get your saw? I believe I will die if I don't learn to play one, myself!)
Quite sweet Shelley. It's a hit
